The Stockholm Resilience Centre Master's programme provides students an introduction to resilience thinking under the guidance from in-house researchers who are leaders in their respective fields.
The social-ecological resilience for sustainable development (SERSD) programme is a transdisciplinary Master’s programme that takes a holistic approach; social, ecological, economic, and ethical; to understanding sustainable development in the Anthropocene, the age of the humans. Students are taught understand resilience thinking, as well as some resilience methods, while taking a biosphere centred approach.
SERSD focuses on a broad field of study framed by three boundary conditions, each of which is addressed in the programme’s courses:
- Society and nature represent interdependent social-ecological systems
- Social-ecological systems are complex adaptive systems
- Cross-scale and dynamic interactions represent new challenges for governance and management in relation to inter-dependent social-ecological systems
The programme is embedded in the centre, and students have close contact to centre researchers and staff. Lectures are often taught by in-house researchers who are leaders in their respective fields.
The SRC Master’s programme is unique. Being here means that each of you will be fully integrated into the intellectual and social culture of the centre. Each class is small, intimate, allowing for interactivity and a stimulating learning environment for everyone, student and teacher alike

SERSD is a two-year Master’s programme that admits 18 students each year. The programme prepares its students for academic careers in research in the field of SERSD or other areas of Sustainability Science.
The first year (60hp/ ECTS) consists of courses; 52.5 hp/ECTS are compulsory courses developed specifically for the programme. The final 7.5 hp/ ECTS can be used for optional courses, or a traineeship arranged by the student.
The courses provide a broad understanding of the field of study, as well as depth in certain areas. They have been developed as a progression; providing a base on which to build on and/or relate to in subsequent courses and a holistic understanding of social-ecological systems.

Course 1: Social-Ecological Systems: Challenges and Approaches, 15 ECTS
Course 2: Systems Theory and Resilience Thinking, 15 ECTS
Course 3: Governance and Management of Social-Ecological Systems, 15 ECTS
Course 4: Resilience Reflections and Applications, 7.5 ECTS
Group work is emphasized in the first year of SERSD, giving students the valuable opportunity to learn from each other’s respective backgrounds, while providing valuable experience in learning how to work in diverse teams.
The second year is dedicated to a Master’s thesis (60 hp/ECTS), which is written in close collaboration with centre researchers.
SERSD’s accomplished alumni
While SERSD will set you up for a career in transdisciplinary environmental research, and many alumni do continue on this path, it’s not the only path to pursue. To name a few examples, other SERSD alumni have gone on to:
• Work for NGOs or other global environmental organizations, like World Wildlife Fund
• Work in both the public and private sectors, such as interning at the European Union or working with Nordic Ecolabelling
• Become environmental entrepreneurs
